This song started out as a piece written for guitar (and delay pedal) around 1990 or so. 10 years later, around 2000 or 2001, a couple of additional sections were written, then drums, bass, strings and piano were added to complete what now comprises Narcissus. Plans were made to release this version of the song (which was slightly faster and more, um, rock) on an album around 2002... which were ultimately shelved.
The song was once again expanded in 2006/07 with an intro that grew to be slightly longer than the song itself. It never quite felt like two separate tracks to me, even though the two halves are easily discernable. As the themes for the album itself unfolded, it became apparent that the first half, Surfacing, was the introduction and an overview for the entire thing (originally planned as a three-album suite).
